LIFE STORY

“We Dey Ready! Send Us!”

“We Dey Ready! Send Us!”

YOU de think of how you go move go the place wey we need more publishers maybe for another country, so that you go fit do more for preaching work? If your answer na yes, the example of Brother and Sister Bergame go fit help you.

Jack and Marie-Line don de pioneer together since 1988. They really know how to begin enjoy any condition. And they don get many different-different assignment for Guadeloupe and French Guiana. The two place dey under France branch now. Make we ask Jack and Marie-Line some questions.

Wetin move you start to pioneer?

Marie-Line: My mama really like preaching, even till now. When I still dey small for Guadeloupe, I de always join my mama for preaching from morning till night. My mama get strong love for Jehovah. Because I love people, as I just finish school for 1985, I start to pioneer.

Jack: When I dey young, many of the people around me na pioneer, and they really like to preach. I de do auxiliary pioneer any time wey we get holiday for school. For weekend, sometimes we de enter bus to go join the pioneers for their territory. We de preach from morning till evening, and after, we de go relax for beach. Those days really sweet!

Small time after I marry Marie-Line for 1988, I tell myself say, ‘We dey free now, so why I no fit do more for preaching work?’ So, I join Marie-Line as pioneer. One year after, we attend pioneer school. And after the school, they make us special pioneer. We enjoy plenty assignment for Guadeloupe before they transfer us go French Guiana.

Wuna assignment don change many times all this years. Wetin de help wuna to cope with new situation?

Marie-Line: The brothers for French Guiana Bethel know say the Bible verse wey we really like pass na Isaiah 6:8. So anytime wey they call us, they go use joke talk say, “Wuna remember that wuna best Bible verse?” Then we go don know say our assignment go change. So we go say, “We dey ready! Send us!”

We de try make we no ever talk say our former assignment better pass the new one, because this one fit make us no enjoy our new assignment. We still de try our best to make friends with our brothers and sisters.

Jack: For some territory, some brothers and sisters no de like make we comot for there, so they go try to convince us to stay around them. But when we comot for Guadeloupe, one brother remind us the thing wey Jesus talk for Matthew 13:38 say: “The farm na the world.” So anytime wey our assignment change, we de remind ourself say the territory wey we dey na still the farm. After all, na the people and the territory dey important pass!

Anytime we first reach any territory, we de see say the people for there de survive, and them dey happy. So, we too go try de live as them de live. The food fit dey different, but we de join them eat their food and drink their water. But we de make sure say we de take care of our health well. We de try to talk good things about any assignment wey we get.

Marie-Line: We still de learn many things from the brothers and sisters for the territory. I remember when we first reach French Guiana. Heavy rain de fall, so we think say we go need to wait for the rain to stop before we go preach. But one sister ask me say, “You don ready make we go?” I surprise and say, “How?” The sister answer say, “Take your umbrella, and we go go with our bicycle.” Na there I learn how to use one hand hold umbrella and ride bicycle. If to say I no learn-am, I for no fit preach for rainy season!

The number of times wey wuna don move don reach about 15 times or pass. Which advise wuna get for other people to help them when they want move?

Marie-Line: To move no dey easy. E dey important make person see house wey dey okay so that e go fit relax when e come back from preaching.

Jack: I de like to paint the inside of our new house again. Sometimes, when the brothers for our branch office know say we no go stay long for there, they go say, “Jack, no border to paint-am this time!”

Marie-Line na expert for packing! E de pack different-different things for different-different box and write “bathroom,” “bedroom,” “kitchen,” and other things. So when we reach our new territory, we go just put the different-different box for the place wey we go need them. My wife de write the list of things wey dey all the box. We no de suffer to find anything.

Marie-Line: Because we don learn how to arrange ourself and our thing well, we no de waste time to start preaching when we reach our new territory.

How wuna de arrange wuna time so that wuna go fit “do [wuna] work for God well”?—2 Tim. 4:5.

Marie-Line: We de rest and prepare for meetings on Mondays. And we de use all other days go preach.

Jack: The truth be say, we get number of hours wey we suppose to preach with every month. But no be that one be the number one thing to us, na preaching be our number one thing. From the time wey we comot for house till the time wey we go come back, we de try to talk to all the people wey we see.

Marie-Line: When we go outing, I de always carry tracts. Some people go come meet us and say make we give them our book, even when we no tell them say we be Jehovah Witness. So we de dey careful about how we de behave and dress. People de notice things like that.

Jack: We de do good things to our neighbors, this one de help them to want learn the truth. I de pick any paper wey I see for ground go trowey, and rake the garden around our house. Our neighbors de notice this things and sometimes them de tell us say, “You go fit give me Bible?”

Wuna don serve for different-different territory wey no easy. Wuna get any story to tell us about any of them?

Jack: Some territory for Guiana, e no easy to reach there. For one week, we de always travel 370 miles (600 km) for bad road before we go reach there. I no fit forget when we go the village of St. Élie, for Amazon forest. E take us many hours to reach there. Na one kind die-die motor and powerboat we enter. The work wey many people for there de do na to dig gold. Some of them give us small piece of gold for contribution for the magazine wey we give them! For evening, we show them one of our videos. And many of them come.

Marie-Line: E never take long time wey they say make Jack come give Memorial talk for Camopi. To reach there, we travel for four hours with motorboat for water. The name of the river na Oyapock River. We really enjoy the experience.

Jack: Any part wey the river low, the speed of the water go flow too fast, and that one really dey dangerous because of the rocks. E really dey wonderful to see the speed as the boat de near-am. The boatman really need to sabi the water and know how to control the boat well. But na fine experience. Na only six brothers and sisters come the Memorial, but na about 50 people attend and some of them na Amerindians!

Marie-Line: Young people go fit get this kind sweet and wonderful experience if them dey ready to do more for Jehovah. You need to trust Jehovah for all this condition, and your faith go de strong more-more. We de always see how Jehovah de help us.

Wuna don learn many language. To learn different-different language dey easy for wuna like that?

Jack: No, e no easy o. I learn this language them because I need to use them preach and help the congregation. I start to conduct Watchtower Study for Sranantongo * language even before I do Bible reading for the language! I ask one brother whether they understand me. The brother talk say, “Sometimes we no understand some things wey you talk, but you really try.” The children really help me. Anytime I make mistake they go tell me. But the big people no de tell me. I really learn many things from young people for there.

Marie-Line: For one territory, I get Bible students for French, Portuguese, and Sranantongo. One sister advise me say when I want study them, make I start with the language wey hard for me pass and finish with the language wey I really sabi well. I no first understand why the sister talk like that.

One day, I conduct one study for Sranantongo, and conduct the second one for Portuguese. When I start the second one, the sister tell me say, “Marie-Line, e be like say problem dey o!” Na that time I know say I de talk to Brazilian woman with Sranantongo language instead of Portuguese! Na that time I come understand why the sister give me that advice.

The brothers and sisters for all the place wey wuna don serve love wuna. Wetin help wuna to be good friends with them?

Jack: Proverbs 11:25 talk say: “Person with open-hand go succeed.” We no de waste time to spend time with people and to do things for them to help them. As for Kingdom Hall work, some go talk say: “Allow the publishers to do the work.” But I go tell them say: “Well, me too na publisher. So if work dey to do, I want make sure say I join do-am.” The truth be say all of us need some time for ourself. But we de always tell ourself say we no go allow that one stop us make we no do good things for other people.

Marie-Line: We de try our best to show our brothers and sisters say we care about them. So, that one de make us know when they need help, like to help bring their children come back from school. Then, we go know how to plan ourself so that we go fit help. This one de make our friendship with them dey tight more. And we de always dey ready to help them when they need help.

Which blessings wuna don get as wuna de serve for different-different place wey need really dey?

Jack: As we de serve full-time, Jehovah don really bless us. Many times, we de get opportunity to see and enjoy the things wey Jehovah make. The truth be say, we face some problems. But we get peace of mind because we know say our brothers and sisters de support us for anywhere wey we dey.

When I still dey young, they put me for prison for French Guiana because I no gree join soldier. I no ever think-am say one day I go come back here as missionary. And they even allow me to visit people for prison. True-true, the blessing of Jehovah no get equal!

Marie-Line: The thing wey de really give me joy pass na to do everything wey I fit do to help people. We really glad say we be part of Jehovah’s organization. We don dey tight more as husband and wife. Sometimes, Jack go ask me say whether we fit invite some husband and wife wey need encouragement come our house, so that we go chop together. Many times I de talk say: “Na exactly wetin I de think be that!” Na so e just de happen.

Jack: E never take long time wey doctor tell me say I get cancer. But Marie-Line no de like to hear say small time, I fit die. I don tell-am say, “Darling, I never old. But even if I die tomorrow, I know say I don use my life serve Jehovah. Na this one be the number one thing, and e de make me happy.”—Gen. 25:8

Marie-Line: Jehovah don open many doors wey we no expect, and e allow us to do things wey we no ever think say we go fit do for our life. Many good things don really happen for our life. We trust Jehovah with complete heart. And anywhere wey the organization say make we go, na there we go go!

^ par. 32 Sranantongo na English, Dutch, Portuguese, and African language them wey they mix together. The people wey form the language na slaves.
