Numbers 27:1-23
27 * And the daughters of Silpahad the son of Hepher the son of Gilead the son of Makir the son of Joseph came forward—and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah and Noʽah and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirsah—
2 and stood before Moses and Priest Eleazar and the princes and all the congregation at the door of the Tent of Meeting, saying
3 “Our father died in the wilderness, not having been among the company that combined against Jehovah in Korah’s company, but dying for his own sin, and had no sons.
4 Why should our father’s name be subtracted from among his clan because he had no son? give us a property among our father’s brothers.”
5 And Moses presented their case before Jehovah.
6 And Jehovah said to Moses
7 “Silpahad’s daughters are right in what they say: you shall give them hereditary property among their father’s brothers and let their father’s hereditary right pass to them.
8 And you shall tell the sons of Israel, When a man dies and has no son you shall let his inheritance pass to his daughter;
9 and if he has no daughter you shall give his inheritance to his brothers;
10 and if he has no brothers you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers;
11 and if his father has no brothers you shall give his inheritance to his next of kin in his clan and he shall take possession of it. And the sons of Israel shall have it for a legal usage, as Jehovah commanded Moses.”
12 And Jehovah said to Moses “Go up on this highland across the river and see the country I have given to the sons of Israel:
13 you shall see it and be gathered to your kinsfolk too as your brother Aaron was,
14 * as you disobeyed my directions in the wilderness of Sin, at the congregation’s upbraiding, to recognize my holiness before their eyes at the water.” (That is, the water of Meribah-Kadesh, wilderness of Sin.)
15 And Moses spoke to Jehovah, saying
16 “Let Jehovah, the God of Spirits of all mortals, appoint a man over the congregation
17 who shall go out before them and go in before them, and lead them out and lead them in, that Jehovah’s congregation may not be like sheep that have no shepherd.”
18 And Jehovah said to Moses “Take Joshuaʽ the son of Nun, a man who has a spirit in him, and lay your hands on him,
19 and set him before Priest Eleazar and before all the congregation, and commission him before their eyes
20 and put some of your prestige on him, so that all the congregation of the sons of Israel shall hear.
21 And he shall stand before Priest Eleazar, and he shall submit questions to the decision of the Urim before Jehovah for him: by his directions he shall go out and by his directions come in, he and all the sons of Israel with him, and all the congregation.”
22 And Moses did as Jehovah commanded him, and took Joshuaʽ and set him before Priest Eleazar and before all the congregation,
23 and laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as Jehovah had directed by Moses.
