Hebrews 11:1-40

11  Ἔστιν Isδὲ butπίστις faithἐλπιζομένων of (things) being hoped forὑπόστασις, sub-standing,πραγμάτων of thingsἔλεγχος reproofοὐ notβλεπομένων· (things) being looked at; 2  ἐν inταύτῃ this [faith]γὰρ forἐμαρτυρήθησαν were borne witness toοἱ theπρεσβύτεροι. older men. 3  Πίστει To faithνοοῦμεν we are mindingκατηρτίσθαι to have been adjusted downτοὺς theαἰῶνας agesῥήματι to sayingθεοῦ, of God,εἰς intoτὸ theμὴ notἐκ out ofφαινομένων (things) appearingτὸ the (thing)βλεπόμενον being looked atγεγονέναι. to have occurred. 4  Πίστει To faithπλείονα moreθυσίαν sacrificeἍβελ Abelπαρὰ besideΚαὶν Cainπροσήνεγκεν bore towardτῷ to theθεῷ, God,δι’ throughἧς which [faith]ἐμαρτυρήθη he was borne witness toεἶναι to beδίκαιος, righteous,μαρτυροῦντος of (one) witnessingἐπὶ uponτοῖς theδώροις giftsαὐτοῦ of himτοῦ of theθεοῦ, God,καὶ andδι’ throughαὐτῆς itἀποθανὼν having diedἔτι yetλαλεῖ. he is speaking. 5  Πίστει To faithἙνὼχ Enochμετετέθη was transferredτοῦ of theμὴ notἰδεῖν to seeθάνατον, death,καὶ andοὐχ notηὑρίσκετο he was being foundδιότι through whichμετέθηκεν transferredαὐτὸν himtheθεός· God;πρὸ beforeγὰρ forτῆς theμεταθέσεως transferenceμεμαρτύρηται he has been borne witness toεὐαρεστηκέναι to have pleased wellτῷ to theθεῷ, God, 6  χωρὶς apart fromδὲ butπίστεως faithἀδύνατον impossibleεὐαρεστῆσαι, to please well,πιστεῦσαι to believeγὰρ forδεῖ it is bindingτὸν the (one)προσερχόμενον coming towardτῷ to theθεῷ Godὅτι thatἔστιν he isκαὶ andτοῖς to the (ones)ἐκζητοῦσιν seeking outαὐτὸν himμισθαποδότης giver back of rewardγίνεται. he is becoming. 7  Πίστει To faithχρηματισθεὶς having been divinely warnedΝῶε Noahπερὶ aboutτῶν the (things)μηδέπω not as yetβλεπομένων being looked atεὐλαβηθεὶς having been held wellκατεσκεύασεν he constructedκιβωτὸν arkεἰς intoσωτηρίαν salvationτοῦ of theοἴκου householdαὐτοῦ, of him,δι’ throughἧς which [faith]κατέκρινεν he judged downτὸν theκόσμον, world,καὶ andτῆς of theκατὰ according toπίστιν faithδικαιοσύνης righteousnessἐγένετο he becameκληρονόμος. heir. 8  Πίστει To faithκαλούμενος being called᾿Αβραὰμ Abrahamὑπήκουσεν obeyedἐξελθεῖν to go outεἰς intoτόπον placeὃν whichἤμελλεν he was being aboutλαμβάνειν to be receivingεἰς intoκληρονομίαν, inheritance,καὶ andἐξῆλθεν he went outμὴ notἐπιστάμενος knowing wellποῦ whereἔρχεται. he is going. 9  Πίστει To faithπαρῴκησεν he dwelt besideεἰς intoγῆν earthτῆς of theἐπαγγελίας promiseὡς asἀλλοτρίαν, one belonging to another,ἐν inσκηναῖς tentsκατοικήσας having dwelt downμετὰ withἸσαὰκ Isaacκαὶ andἸακὼβ Jacobτῶν theσυνκληρονόμων joint heirsτῆς of theἐπαγγελίας promiseτῆς theαὐτῆς· very; 10  ἐξεδέχετο he was receiving outγὰρ forτὴν theτοὺς theθεμελίους foundationsἔχουσαν havingπόλιν, city,ἧς of whichτεχνίτης artificerκαὶ andδημιουργὸς public workertheθεός. Esau. 21  Πίστει To faithἸακὼβ Jacobἀποθνήσκων dyingἕκαστον eachτῶν of theυἱῶν sonsἸωσὴφ of Josephεὐλόγησεν, he blessed,καὶ andπροσεκύνησεν he worshipedἐπὶ uponτὸ theἄκρον tipτῆς of theῥάβδου staffαὐτοῦ. of him. 22  Πίστει To faithἸωσὴφ Josephτελευτῶν deceasingπερὶ aboutτῆς theἐξόδου exodusτῶν of theυἱῶν sonsἸσραὴλ of Israelἐμνημόνευσεν, he mentioned,καὶ andπερὶ aboutτῶν theὀστέων bonesαὐτοῦ of himἐνετείλατο. he enjoined. 23  Πίστει To faithΜωυσῆς Mosesγεννηθεὶς having been generatedἐκρύβη was hidτρίμηνον three monthsὑπὸ byτῶν theπατέρων fathersαὐτοῦ, of him,διότι through whichεἶδον they sawἀστεῖον beautifulτὸ theπαιδίον little boyκαὶ andοὐκ notἐφοβήθησαν they fearedτὸ theδιάταγμα ordinanceτοῦ of theβασιλέως. king. 24  Πίστει To faithΜωυσῆς Mosesμέγας greatγενόμενος having becomeἠρνήσατο he deniedλέγεσθαι to be being saidυἱὸς sonθυγατρὸς of daughterΦαραώ, of Pharaoh, 25  μᾶλλον ratherἑλόμενος selecting for selfσυνκακουχεῖσθαι to be badly treated togetherτῷ to theλαῷ peopleτοῦ of theθεοῦ Godthanπρόσκαιρον toward appointed timeἔχειν to be havingἁμαρτίας of sinἀπόλαυσιν, enjoyment, 26  μείζονα greaterπλοῦτον richesἡγησάμενος having esteemedτῶν of theΑἰγύπτου of Egyptθησαυρῶν treasuresτὸν theὀνειδισμὸν reproachτοῦ of theχριστοῦ, Christ,ἀπέβλεπεν he was looking awayγὰρ forεἰς intoτὴν theμισθαποδοσίαν. giving back of reward. 27  Πίστει To faithκατέλιπεν he left downΑἴγυπτον, Egypt,μὴ notφοβηθεὶς having fearedτὸν theθυμὸν angerτοῦ of theβασιλέως, king,τὸν theγὰρ forἀόρατον unseen (one)ὡς asὁρῶν seeingἐκαρτέρησεν. he persisted with might. 28  Πίστει To faithπεποίηκεν he has madeτὸ theπάσχα passoverκαὶ andτὴν theπρόσχυσιν pouring towardτοῦ of theαἵματος, blood,ἵνα in order thatμὴ notthe (one)ὀλοθρεύων destroyingτὰ theπρωτότοκα firstborn (ones)θίγῃ might contactαὐτῶν. of them. 29  Πίστει To faithδιέβησαν they stepped throughτὴν the᾿Ερυθρὰν RedΘάλασσαν Seaὡς asδιὰ throughξηρᾶς dryγῆς, earth,ἧς of which [sea]πεῖραν trialλαβόντες having takenοἱ theΑἰγύπτιοι Egyptiansκατεπόθησαν. were drunk down. 30  Πίστει To faithτὰ theτείχη wallsἸερειχὼ of Jerichoἔπεσαν fellκυκλωθέντα having been encircledἐπὶ uponἑπτὰ sevenἡμέρας. days. 31  Πίστει To faithῬαὰβ Rahabtheπόρνη harlotοὐ notσυναπώλετο destroyed self togetherτοῖς to the (ones)ἀπειθήσασιν, having disobeyed,δεξαμένη [she] having receivedτοὺς theκατασκόπους spiesμετ’ withεἰρήνης. peace. 32  Καὶ Andτί whatἔτι yetλέγω; may I be saying?ἐπιλείψει Will leave uponμε meγὰρ forδιηγούμενον telling throughtheχρόνος timeπερὶ aboutΓεδεών, Gideon,Βαράκ, Barak,Σαμψών, Samson,Ἰεφθάε, Jephthah,Δαυείδ Davidτε andκαὶ andΣαμουὴλ Samuelκαὶ andτῶν theπροφητῶν, prophets, 33  οἳ whoδιὰ throughπίστεως faithκατηγωνίσαντο downed in struggleβασιλείας, kingdoms,ἠργάσαντο they workedδικαιοσύνην, righteousness,ἐπέτυχον they obtainedἐπαγγελιῶν, of promises,ἔφραξαν they fenced inστόματα mouthsλεόντων, of lions, 34  ἔσβεσαν they quenchedδύναμιν powerπυρός, of fire,ἔφυγον they fled fromστόματα mouthsμαχαίρης, of sword,ἐδυναμώθησαν they were made powerfulἀπὸ fromἀσθενείας, weakness,ἐγενήθησαν they becameἰσχυροὶ strongἐν inπολέμῳ, war,παρεμβολὰς encampmentsἔκλιναν they inclinedἀλλοτρίων· of those belonging to another; 35  ἔλαβον receivedγυναῖκες womenἐξ out ofἀναστάσεως resurrectionτοὺς theνεκροὺς dead (ones)αὐτῶν· of them;ἄλλοι othersδὲ butἐτυμπανίσθησαν, were beaten with sticks,οὐ notπροσδεξάμενοι having accepted for selvesτὴν theἀπολύτρωσιν, release by ransom,ἵνα in order thatκρείττονος of betterἀναστάσεως resurrectionτύχωσιν· they might obtain; 36  ἕτεροι different (ones)δὲ butἐμπαιγμῶν of mockingsκαὶ andμαστίγων of scourgingsπεῖραν trialἔλαβον, they took,ἔτι yetδὲ butδεσμῶν of bondsκαὶ andφυλακῆς· of prison; 37  ἐλιθάσθησαν, they were stoned,ἐπειράσθησαν, they were tried,ἐπρίσθησαν, they were sawn asunder,ἐν inφόνῳ murderμαχαίρης of swordἀπέθανον, they died,περιῆλθον they went aboutἐν inμηλωταῖς, sheepskins,ἐν inαἰγίοις belonging to goatsδέρμασιν, skins,ὑστερούμενοι, being in want,θλιβόμενοι, being in tribulation,κακουχούμενοι, being badly treated, 38  ὧν of whomοὐκ notἦν wasἄξιος worthytheκόσμος worldἐπὶ uponἐρημίαις desertsπλανώμενοι being made to wanderκαὶ andὄρεσι to mountainsκαὶ andσπηλαίοις to cavesκαὶ andταῖς to theὀπαῖς (peep) holesτῆς of theγῆς. earth. 39  Καὶ Andοὗτοι theseπάντες allμαρτυρηθέντες having been borne witness toδιὰ throughτῆς theπίστεως faithοὐκ notἐκομίσαντο they carried off for selvesτὴν theἐπαγγελίαν, promise, 40  τοῦ of theθεοῦ Godπερὶ aboutἡμῶν usκρεῖττόν betterτι somethingπροβλεψαμένου, having foreseen,ἵνα in order thatμὴ notχωρὶς apart fromἡμῶν usτελειωθῶσιν. they might be perfected.
