John 11:1-57

11  ῏Ην Wasδέ butτις some [man]ἀσθενῶν, being sick,Λάζαρος Lazarusἀπὸ fromΒηθανίας Bethanyἐκ out ofτῆς theκώμης villageΜαρίας of Maryκαὶ andΜάρθας Marthaτῆς of theἀδελφῆς sisterαὐτῆς. of her. 2  ἦν Wasδὲ butΜαριὰμ Marythe (one)ἀλείψασα having greasedτὸν theκύριον Lordμύρῳ to perfumed oilκαὶ andἐκμάξασα having wiped dry offτοὺς theπόδας feetαὐτοῦ of himταῖς to theθριξὶν hairsαὐτῆς, of her,ἧς of whomtheἀδελφὸς brotherΛάζαρος Lazarusἠσθένει. was being sick. 3  ἀπέστειλαν Sent forthοὖν thereforeαἱ theἀδελφαὶ sistersπρὸς towardαὐτὸν himλέγουσαι sayingΚύριε, Lord,ἴδε seeὃν whomφιλεῖς you are having affection forἀσθενεῖ. is being sick. 4  ἀκούσας Having heardδὲ buttheἸησοῦς Jesusεἶπεν saidΑὕτη Thistheἀσθένεια sicknessοὐκ notἔστιν isπρὸς towardθάνατον deathἀλλ’ butὑπὲρ overτῆς theδόξης gloryτοῦ of theθεοῦ Godἵνα in order thatδοξασθῇ might be glorifiedtheυἱὸς Sonτοῦ of theθεοῦ Godδι’ throughαὐτῆς. it. 5  ἠγάπα Was lovingδὲ buttheἸησοῦς Jesusτὴν theΜάρθαν Marthaκαὶ andτὴν theἀδελφὴν sisterαὐτῆς of herκαὶ andτὸν theΛάζαρον. Lazarus. 6  ὡς Asοὖν thereforeἤκουσεν he heardὅτι thatἀσθενεῖ, he is being sick,τότε thenμὲν indeedἔμεινεν he remainedἐν inwhichἦν he wasτόπῳ placeδύο twoἡμέρας· days; 7  ἔπειτα thereuponμετὰ afterτοῦτο thisλέγει he is sayingτοῖς to theμαθηταῖς disciplesἌγωμεν Let us be goingεἰς intoτὴν theἸουδαίαν Judeaπάλιν. again. 8  λέγουσιν Are sayingαὐτῷ to himοἱ theμαθηταί disciplesῬαββεί, Rabbi,νῦν nowἐζήτουν were seekingσε youλιθάσαι to stoneοἱ theἸουδαῖοι, Judeans,καὶ andπάλιν againὑπάγεις you are going underἐκεῖ; there? 9  ἀπεκρίθη AnsweredἸησοῦς JesusΟὐχὶ Notδώδεκα twelveὧραί hoursεἰσιν areτῆς of theἡμέρας; day?ἐάν If everτις anyoneπεριπατῇ may be walking aboutἐν inτῇ theἡμέρᾳ, day,οὐ notπροσκόπτει, he is striking toward,ὅτι becauseτὸ theφῶς lightτοῦ of theκόσμου worldτούτου thisβλέπει· he is seeing; 10  ἐὰν if everδέ butτις anyoneπεριπατῇ may be walking aboutἐν inτῇ theνυκτί, night,προσκόπτει, he is striking toward,ὅτι becauseτὸ theφῶς lightοὐκ notἔστιν isἐν inαὐτῷ. him. 11  ταῦτα These (things)εἶπεν, he said,καὶ andμετὰ afterτοῦτο thisλέγει he is sayingαὐτοῖς to themΛάζαρος Lazarustheφίλος friendἡμῶν of usκεκοίμηται, has laid down to rest,ἀλλὰ butπορεύομαι I am goingἵνα in order thatἐξυπνίσω I might get out of sleepαὐτόν. him. 12  εἶπαν Saidοὖν thereforeοἱ theμαθηταὶ disciplesαὐτῷ to himΚύριε, Lord,εἰ ifκεκοίμηται he has laid down to restσωθήσεται. he will be saved. 13  εἰρήκει Had spokenδὲ buttheἸησοῦς Jesusπερὶ aboutτοῦ theθανάτου deathαὐτοῦ. of him.ἐκεῖνοι Those (ones)δὲ butἔδοξαν thoughtὅτι thatπερὶ aboutτῆς theκοιμήσεως taking restτοῦ of theὕπνου sleepλέγει. he is saying. 14  τότε Thenοὖν thereforeεἶπεν saidαὐτοῖς to themtheἸησοῦς Jesusπαρρησίᾳ outspokenlyΛάζαρος Lazarusἀπέθανεν, died, 15  καὶ andχαίρω I am rejoicingδι’ throughὑμᾶς, YOU,ἵνα in order thatπιστεύσητε, YOU might believe,ὅτι thatοὐκ notἤμην I wasἐκεῖ· there;ἀλλὰ butἄγωμεν let us be goingπρὸς towardαὐτόν. him. 16  εἶπεν Saidοὖν thereforeΘωμᾶς Thomasthe (one)λεγόμενος being saidΔίδυμος Twinτοῖς to theσυνμαθηταῖς fellow disciplesἌγωμεν Let us be goingκαὶ alsoἡμεῖς weἵνα in order thatἀποθάνωμεν we might dieμετ’ withαὐτοῦ. him. 17  ᾿Ελθὼν Having comeοὖν thereforetheἸησοῦς Jesusεὗρεν foundαὐτὸν himτέσσαρας fourἤδη alreadyἡμέρας daysἔχοντα havingἐν inτῷ theμνημείῳ. memorial tomb. 18  ἦν Wasδὲ butΒηθανία Bethanyἐγγὺς nearτῶν theἸεροσολύμων Jerusalemὡς asἀπὸ fromσταδίων stadiaδεκαπέντε. fifteen. 19  πολλοὶ Manyδὲ butἐκ out ofτῶν theἸουδαίων Jewsἐληλύθεισαν had comeπρὸς towardτὴν theΜάρθαν Marthaκαὶ andΜαριὰμ Maryἵνα in order thatπαραμυθήσωνται they might consoleαὐτὰς themπερὶ aboutτοῦ theἀδελφοῦ. brother. 20  Theοὖν thereforeΜάρθα Marthaὡς asἤκουσεν she heardὅτι thatἸησοῦς Jesusἔρχεται is comingὑπήντησεν metαὐτῷ· to him;Μαριὰμ Maryδὲ butἐν inτῷ theοἴκῳ houseἐκαθέζετο. was sitting. 21  εἶπεν Saidοὖν thereforetheΜάρθα Marthaπρὸς towardἸησοῦν JesusΚύριε, Lord,εἰ ifἦς you wereὧδε hereοὐκ notἂν likelyἀπέθανεν diedtheἀδελφός brotherμου· of me; 22  καὶ andνῦν nowοἶδα I have knownὅτι thatὅσα as many (things) asἂν likelyαἰτήσῃ you might askτὸν theθεὸν Godδώσει will giveσοι to youtheθεός. God. 23  λέγει Is Sayingαὐτῇ to hertheἸησοῦς Jesus᾿Αναστήσεται Will stand uptheἀδελφός brotherσου. of you. 24  λέγει Is sayingαὐτῷ to himtheΜάρθα MarthaΟἶδα I have knownὅτι thatἀναστήσεται he will stand upἐν inτῇ theἀναστάσει resurrectionἐν inτῇ theἐσχάτῃ lastἡμέρᾳ. day. 25  εἶπεν Saidαὐτῇ to hertheἸησοῦς Jesus᾿Εγώ Iεἰμι amtheἀνάστασις resurrectionκαὶ andtheζωή· life;the (one)πιστεύων believingεἰς intoἐμὲ meκἂν and if everἀποθάνῃ he should dieζήσεται, he will live, 26  καὶ andπᾶς everyonetheζῶν livingκαὶ andπιστεύων believingεἰς intoἐμὲ meοὐ notμὴ notἀποθάνῃ should dieεἰς intoτὸν theαἰῶνα· age;πιστεύεις are believing youτοῦτο; this? 27  λέγει She is sayingαὐτῷ to himΝαί, Yes,κύριε· Lord;ἐγὼ Iπεπίστευκα have believedὅτι thatσὺ youεἶ aretheχριστὸς Christtheυἱὸς Sonτοῦ of theθεοῦ Godthe (one)εἰς intoτὸν theκόσμον worldἐρχόμενος. coming. 28  καὶ Andτοῦτο thisεἰποῦσα having saidἀπῆλθεν she went offκαὶ andἐφώνησεν she sounded forΜαριὰμ Maryτὴν theἀδελφὴν sisterαὐτῆς of herλάθρᾳ secretlyεἴπασα having saidTheδιδάσκαλος Teacherπάρεστιν is alongsideκαὶ andφῶνεῖ he is sounding forσε. you. 29  ἐκείνη That (one)δὲ butὡς asἤκουσεν she heardἠγέρθη she rose upταχὺ quicklyκαὶ andἤρχετο she was comingπρὸς towardαὐτόν· him; 30  οὔπω not yetδὲ butἐληλύθει had cometheἸησοῦς Jesusεἰς intoτὴν theκώμην, village,ἀλλ’ butἦν he wasἔτι yetἐν inτῷ theτόπῳ placeὅπου whereὑπήντησεν metαὐτῷ to himtheΜάρθα. Martha. 31  οἱ Theοὖν thereforeἸουδαῖοι Jewsοἱ the (ones)ὄντες beingμετ’ withαὐτῆς herἐν inτῇ theοἰκίᾳ houseκαὶ andπαραμυθούμενοι consolingαὐτήν, her,ἰδόντες having seenτὴν theΜαριὰμ Maryὅτι thatταχέως quicklyἀνέστη she stood upκαὶ andἐξῆλθεν, went out,ἠκολούθησαν they followedαὐτῇ to herδόξαντες thinkingὅτι thatὑπάγει she is going underεἰς intoτὸ theμνημεῖον memorial tombἵνα in order thatκλαύσῃ she might weepἐκεῖ. there. 32  Theοὖν thereforeΜαριὰμ Maryὡς asἦλθεν she cameὅπου whereἦν wasἸησοῦς Jesusἰδοῦσα having seenαὐτὸν himἔπεσεν fellαὐτοῦ of himπρὸς towardτοὺς theπόδας, feet,λέγουσα sayingαὐτῷ to himΚύριε, Lord,εἰ ifἦς you wereὧδε hereοὐκ notἄν likelyμου of meἀπέθανεν diedtheἀδελφός. brother. 33  Ἰησοῦς Jesusοὖν thereforeὡς asεἶδεν he sawαὐτὴν herκλαίουσαν weepingκαὶ andτοὺς the (ones)συνελθόντας having come withαὐτῇ to herἸουδαίους Jewsκλαίοντας weepingἐνεβριμήσατο he groanedτῷ to theπνεύματι spiritκαὶ andἐτάραξεν he troubledἑαυτόν, himself, 34  καὶ andεἶπεν he saidΠοῦ Whereτεθείκατε have YOU putαὐτόν; him?λέγουσιν They are sayingαὐτῷ to himΚύριε, Lord,ἔρχου be comingκαὶ andἴδε. see. 35  ἐδάκρυσεν Shed tearstheἸησοῦς. Jesus. 36  ἔλεγον Were sayingοὖν thereforeοἱ theἸουδαῖοι JewsἼδε Seeπῶς howἐφίλει he was having affection forαὐτόν. him. 37  τινὲς Someδὲ butἐξ out ofαὐτῶν themεἶπαν saidΟὐκ Notἐδύνατο was ableοὗτος this (one)theἀνοίξας having openedτοὺς theὀφθαλμοὺς eyesτοῦ of theτυφλοῦ blind (one)ποιῆσαι to makeἵνα in order thatκαὶ alsoοὗτος this (one)μὴ notἀποθάνῃ; should die? 38  Ἰησοῦς Jesusοὖν thereforeπάλιν againἐμβριμώμενος groaningἐν inἑαυτῷ himselfἔρχεται is comingεἰς intoτὸ theμνημεῖον· memorial tomb;ἦν wasδὲ butσπήλαιον, cave,καὶ andλίθος stoneἐπέκειτο was lyingἐπ’ uponαὐτῷ. it. 39  λέγει Is sayingtheἸησοῦς JesusἌρατε Lift up YOUτὸν theλίθον. stone.λέγει Is sayingαὐτῷ to himtheἀδελφὴ sisterτοῦ of the (one)τετελευτηκότος having deceasedΜάρθα MarthaΚύριε, Lord,ἤδη alreadyὄζει, he is smelling,τεταρταῖος fourth [day]γάρ forἐστιν. is. 40  λέγει Is sayingαὐτῇ to hertheἸησοῦς JesusΟὐκ Notεἶπόν I saidσοι to youὅτι thatἐὰν if everπιστεύσῃς you should believeὄψῃ you will seeτὴν theδόξαν gloryτοῦ of theθεοῦ; God? 41  ἦραν They lifted upοὖν thereforeτὸν theλίθον. stone.Theδὲ butἸησοῦς Jesusἦρεν lifted upτοὺς theὀφθαλμοὺς eyesἄνω upwardκαὶ andεἶπεν he saidΠάτερ, Father,εὐχαριστῶ I am thankingσοι to youὅτι thatἤκουσάς you heardμου, me, 42  ἐγὼ Iδὲ butᾔδειν had knownὅτι thatπάντοτέ alwaysμου of meἀκούεις· you are hearing;ἀλλὰ butδιὰ throughτὸν theὄχλον crowdτὸν the (one)περιεστῶτα having stood aroundεἶπον I saidἵνα in order thatπιστεύσωσιν they should believeὅτι thatσύ youμε meἀπέστειλας. sent forth. 43  καὶ Andταῦτα these (things)εἰπὼν having saidφωνῇ to voiceμεγάλῃ greatἐκραύγασεν he cried outΛάζαρε, Lazarus,δεῦρο hitherἔξω. outside. 44  ἐξῆλθεν Came outthe (one)τεθνηκὼς having diedδεδεμένος having been boundτοὺς theπόδας feetκαὶ andτὰς theχεῖρας handsκειρίαις, to swathing bands,καὶ andtheὄψις faceαὐτοῦ of himσουδαρίῳ to clothπεριεδέδετο. had been bound about.λέγει Is sayingtheἸησοῦς Jesusαὐτοῖς to themΛύσατε Loose YOUαὐτὸν himκαὶ andἄφετε let YOU go offαὐτὸν himὑπάγειν. to be going under. 45  Πολλοὶ Manyοὖν thereforeἐκ out ofτῶν theἸουδαίων, Jews,οἱ the (ones)ἐλθόντες having comeπρὸς towardτὴν theΜαριὰμ Maryκαὶ andθεασάμενοι having viewedwhichἐποίησεν, he did,ἐπίστευσαν believedεἰς intoαὐτόν· him; 46  τινὲς someδὲ butἐξ out ofαὐτῶν themἀπῆλθον went offπρὸς towardτοὺς theΦαρισαίους Phariseesκαὶ andεἶπαν saidαὐτοῖς to themwhat (things)ἐποίησεν didἸησοῦς. Jesus. 47  Συνήγαγον Led togetherοὖν thereforeοἱ theἀρχιερεῖς chief priestsκαὶ andοἱ theΦαρισαῖοι Phariseesσυνέδριον, Sanhedrin,καὶ andἔλεγον they were sayingΤί Whatποιοῦμεν are we doingὅτι becauseοὗτος thistheἄνθρωπος manπολλὰ manyποιεῖ is doingσημεῖα; signs? 48  ἐὰν If everἀφῶμεν we should let go offαὐτὸν himοὕτως, thus,πάντες allπιστεύσουσιν will believeεἰς intoαὐτόν, himκαὶ andἐλεύσονται will comeοἱ theῬωμαῖοι Romansκαὶ andἀροῦσιν they will lift upἡμῶν of usκαὶ andτὸν theτόπον placeκαὶ andτὸ theἔθνος. nation. 49  εἷς Oneδέ butτις someἐξ out ofαὐτῶν themΚαιάφας, Caiaphas,ἀρχιερεὺς chief priestὢν beingτοῦ of theἐνιαυτοῦ yearἐκείνου, that,εἶπεν saidαὐτοῖς to themὙμεῖς YOUοὐκ notοἴδατε have knownοὐδέν, nothing, 50  οὐδὲ not-butλογίζεσθε YOU are reasoning outὅτι thatσυμφέρει it is bearing togetherὑμῖν to YOUἵνα in order thatεἷς oneἄνθρωπος manἀποθάνῃ should dieὑπὲρ overτοῦ theλαοῦ peopleκαὶ andμὴ notὅλον wholeτὸ theἔθνος nationἀπόληται. should be destroyed. 51  Τοῦτο Thisδὲ butἀφ’ fromἑαυτοῦ himselfοὐκ notεἶπεν, he said,ἀλλὰ butἀρχιερεὺς chief priestὢν beingτοῦ of theἐνιαυτοῦ yearἐκείνου thatἐπροφήτευσεν he prophesiedὅτι thatἔμελλεν was aboutἸησοῦς Jesusἀποθνήσκειν to be dying offὑπὲρ overτοῦ theἔθνους, nation, 52  καὶ andοὐχ notὑπὲρ overτοῦ theἔθνους nationμόνον, only,ἀλλ’ butἵνα in order thatκαὶ alsoτὰ theτέκνα childrenτοῦ of theθεοῦ Godτὰ the (ones)διεσκορπισμένα having been scattered throughσυναγάγῃ he might lead togetherεἰς intoἕν. one. 53  ᾿Απ’ Fromἐκείνης thatοὖν thereforeτῆς theἡμέρας dayἐβουλεύσαντο they took counselἵνα in order thatἀποκτείνωσιν they might killαὐτόν. him. 54  Theοὖν thereforeἸησοῦς Jesusοὐκέτι not yetπαρρησία outspokenlyπεριεπάτει was walking aboutἐν inτοῖς theἸουδαίοις, Jews,ἀλλὰ butἀπῆλθεν he went offἐκεῖθεν from thereεἰς intoτὴν theχώραν countryἐγγὺς nearτῆς theἐρήμου, desolate [place],εἰς into᾿Εφραὶμ Ephraimλεγομένην being saidπόλιν, city,κἀκεῖ and thereἔμεινεν he remainedμετὰ withτῶν theμαθητῶν. disciples. 55  ῏Ην Wasδὲ butἐγγὺς nearτὸ theπάσχα passoverτῶν of theἸουδαίων, Jews,καὶ andἀνέβησαν went upπολλοὶ manyεἰς intoἸεροσόλυμα Jerusalemἐκ out ofτῆς theχώρας countryπρὸ beforeτοῦ theπάσχα passoverἵνα in order thatἁγνίσωσιν they might purifyἑαυτούς. selves. 56  ἐζήτουν They were seekingοὖν thereforeτὸν theἸησοῦν Jesusκαὶ andἔλεγον they were sayingμετ’ withἀλλήλων one anotherἐν inτῷ theἱερῷ templeἑστηκότες having stoodΤί Whatδοκεῖ is it seemingὑμῖν; to YOU?ὅτι Thatοὐ notμὴ notἔλθῃ he might comeεἰς intoτὴν theἑορτήν; festival? 57  δεδώκεισαν Had givenδὲ butοἱ theἀρχιερεῖς chief priestsκαὶ andοἱ theΦαρισαῖοι Phariseesἐντολὰς commandsἵνα in order thatἐάν if everτις anyoneγνῷ should knowποῦ whereἐστὶν he isμηνύσῃ, he should disclose,ὅπως thatπιάσωσιν they might get hold ofαὐτόν. him.
