3  ᾿Εν Inἔτει yearδὲ butπεντεκαιδεκάτῳ five and tenthτῆς of theἡγεμονίας governorshipΤιβερίου of TiberiusΚαίσαρος, Caesar,ἡγεμονεύοντος being governorΠοντίου of PontiusΠειλάτου Pilateτῆς of theἸουδαίας, Judea,καὶ andτετρααρχοῦντος being tetrarchτῆς of theΓαλιλαίας GalileeἩρῴδου, of Herod,Φιλίππου of Philipδὲ butτοῦ theἀδελφοῦ brotherαὐτοῦ of himτετρααρχοῦντος being tetrarchτῆς of theἸτουραίας Ituraeaκαὶ andΤραχωνίτιδος of Trachonitisχώρας, of country,καὶ andΛυσανίου of Lysaniasτῆς of the᾿Αβειληνῆς Abileneτετρααρχοῦντος, being tetrarch, 2  ἐπὶ uponἀρχιερέως chief priestἍννα Annasκαὶ andΚαιάφα, Caiaphas,ἐγένετο came to beῥῆμα sayingθεοῦ of Godἐπὶ uponἸωάνην Johnτὸν theΖαχαρίου of Zechariahυἱὸν sonἐν inτῇ theἐρήμῳ. desolate [place]. 3  καὶ Andἦλθεν he cameεἰς intoπᾶσαν allπερίχωρον country aroundτοῦ of theἸορδάνου Jordanκηρύσσων preachingβάπτισμα baptismμετανοίας of repentanceεἰς intoἄφεσιν letting go offἁμαρτιῶν, of sins, 4  ὡς asγέγραπται it has been writtenἐν inβίβλῳ bookλόγων of wordsἨσαίου of Isaiahτοῦ theπροφήτου prophetΦωνὴ Voiceβοῶντος of (one) calling outἐν inτῇ theἐρήμῳ desolate [place]Ἑτοιμάσατε Make YOU readyτὴν theὁδὸν wayΚυρίου, of Lord,εὐθείας straightποιεῖτε be YOU makingτὰς theτρίβους roadsαὐτοῦ. of him. 5  πᾶσα Everyφάραγξ gullyπληρωθήσεται will be filledκαὶ andπᾶν everyὄρος mountainκαὶ andβουνὸς hillταπεινωθήσεται, will be made low,καὶ andἔσται will beτὰ theσκολιὰ crooked (things)εἰς intoεὐθείας straight (ones)καὶ andαἱ theτραχεῖαι rough (ones)εἰς intoὁδοὺς waysλείας· smooth; 6  καὶ andὄψεται will seeπᾶσα allσὰρξ fleshτὸ theσωτήριον saving meansτοῦ of theθεοῦ. God. 7  Ἔλεγεν He was sayingοὖν thereforeτοῖς to theἐκπορευομένοις going their way outὄχλοις crowdsβαπτισθῆναι to be baptizedὑπ’ byαὐτοῦ himΓεννήματα Generated (ones)ἐχιδνῶν, of vipers,τίς whoὑπέδειξεν showedὑμῖν to YOUφυγεῖν to fleeἀπὸ fromτῆς theμελλούσης about to beὀργῆς; wrath? 8  ποιήσατε Make YOUοὖν thereforeκαρποὺς fruitsἀξίους worthyτῆς of theμετανοίας· repentance;καὶ andμὴ notἄρξησθε start YOUλέγειν to be sayingἐν inἑαυτοῖς selvesΠατέρα Fatherἔχομεν we are havingτὸν the᾿Αβραάμ, Abraham,λέγω I am sayingγὰρ forὑμῖν to YOUὅτι thatδύναται is ableὁ theθεὸς Godἐκ out ofτῶν theλίθων stonesτούτων theseἐγεῖραι to raise upτέκνα childrenτῷ to the᾿Αβραάμ. Abraham. 9  ἤδη Alreadyδὲ butκαὶ alsoἡ theἀξίνη axπρὸς towardτὴν theῥίζαν rootτῶν of theδένδρων treesκεῖται· is lying;πᾶν everyοὖν thereforeδένδρον treeμὴ notποιοῦν makingκαρπὸν fruitκαλὸν fineἐκκόπτεται is being cut outκαὶ andεἰς intoπῦρ fireβάλλεται. is being thrown. 10  καὶ Andἐπηρώτων were inquiring uponαὐτὸν himοἱ theὄχλοι crowdsλέγοντες sayingΤί Whatοὖν thereforeποιήσωμεν; should we do? 11  ἀποκριθεὶς Having answeredδὲ butἔλεγεν he was sayingαὐτοῖς to themὉ The (one)ἔχων havingδύο twoχιτῶνας undergarmentsμεταδότω let him share withτῷ the (one)μὴ notἔχοντι, having,καὶ andὁ the (one)ἔχων havingβρώματα things to eatὁμοίως likewiseποιείτω. let him be doing. 12  ἦλθον Cameδὲ butκαὶ alsoτελῶναι tax collectorsβαπτισθῆναι to be baptizedκαὶ andεἶπαν they saidπρὸς towardαὐτόν himΔιδάσκαλε, Teacher,τί whatποιήσωμεν; should we do? 13  ὁ The (one)δὲ butεἶπεν saidπρὸς towardαὐτούς themΜηδὲν Nothingπλέον moreπαρὰ besideτὸ the (thing)διατεταγμένον having been proratedὑμῖν to YOUπράσσετε. be YOU performing. 14  ἐπηρώτων Were inquiring uponδὲ butαὐτὸν himκαὶ alsoστρατευόμενοι [men] serving in the armyλέγοντες sayingΤί Whatποιήσωμεν should doκαὶ alsoἡμεῖς; we?καὶ Andεἶπεν he saidαὐτοῖς to themΜηδένα No oneδιασείσητε YOU should harassμηδὲ norσυκοφαντήσητε, should YOU take by fig-showing,καὶ andἀρκεῖσθε be YOU satisfiedτοῖς to theὀψωνίοις provisionsὑμῶν. of YOU. 15  Προσδοκῶντος Expectingδὲ butτοῦ of theλαοῦ peopleκαὶ andδιαλογιζομένων reasoningπάντων of all (ones)ἐν inταῖς theκαρδίαις heartsαὐτῶν of themπερὶ aboutτοῦ theἸωάνου, John,μή notποτε at sometimeαὐτὸς heεἴη might beὁ theχριστός, Christ, 16  ἀπεκρίνατο he answeredλέγων sayingπᾶσιν to allὁ theἸωάνης John᾿Εγὼ Iμὲν indeedὕδατι to waterβαπτίζω am baptizingὑμᾶς· YOU;ἔρχεται is comingδὲ butὁ the (one)ἰσχυρότερός strongerμου, of me,οὗ whoseοὐκ notεἰμὶ I amἱκανὸς sufficientλῦσαι to loosenτὸν theἱμάντα laceτῶν of theὑποδημάτων sandalsαὐτοῦ· of him;αὐτὸς heὑμᾶς YOUβαπτίσει will baptizeἐν inπνεύματι spiritἀγίῳ holyκαὶ andπυρί· fire; 17  οὗ whoseτὸ theπτύον winnowing shovelἐν inτῇ theχειρὶ handαὐτοῦ of himδιακαθᾶραι to clean thoroughlyτὴν theἅλωνα threshing floorαὐτοῦ of himκαὶ andσυναγαγεῖν to lead togetherτὸν theσῖτον wheatεἰς intoτὴν theἀποθήκην storehouseαὐτοῦ, of him,τὸ theδὲ butἄχυρον chaffκατακαύσει he will burn downπυρὶ to fireἀσβέστῳ. inextinguishable. 18  Πολλὰ Many [things]μὲν indeedοὖν thereforeκαὶ andἕτερα differentπαρακαλῶν exhortingεὐηγγελίζετο he was declaring good news toτὸν theλαόν· people; 19  ὁ theδὲ butἩρῴδης Herodὁ theτετραάρχης, tetrarch,ἐλεγχόμενος being reprovedὑπ’ byαὐτοῦ himπερὶ aboutἩρῳδιάδος Herodiasτῆς theγυναικὸς womanτοῦ of theἀδελφοῦ brotherαὐτοῦ of himκαὶ andπερὶ aboutπάντων allὧν of whichἐποίησεν didπονηρῶν of wicked (things)ὁ theἩρῴδης, Herod, 20  προσέθηκεν addedκαὶ alsoτοῦτο thisἐπὶ uponπᾶσιν, all [deeds],κατέκλεισεν he locked downτὸν theἸωάνην Johnἐν inφυλακῇ. prison. 21  ᾿Εγένετο It occurredδὲ butἐν inτῷ theβαπτισθῆναι to be baptizedἅπαντα allτὸν theλαὸν peopleκαὶ alsoἸησοῦ of Jesusβαπτισθέντος having been baptizedκαὶ andπροσευχομένου prayingἀνεῳχθῆναι to be openedτὸν theοὐρανὸν heaven 22  καὶ andκαταβῆναι to come downτὸ theπνεῦμα spiritτὸ theἅγιον holyσωματικῷ to bodilyεἴδει shapeὡς asπεριστερὰν doveἐπ’ uponαὐτόν, him,καὶ andφωνὴν voiceἐξ out ofοὐρανοῦ heavenγενέσθαι to come to beΣὺ Youεἶ areὁ theυἱός Sonμου of meὁ theἀγαπητός, loved,ἐν inσοὶ youεὐδόκησα.
