Gershom
(Gerʹshom) [An Alien Resident There].
1. The first-listed son of Levi the son of Jacob. He was the father of Libni and Shimei. (1Ch 6:16, 17, 20, 43, 62, 71) He is also called Gershon.—Ge 46:11; Ex 6:16, 17; Nu 3:17, 18; 1Ch 6:1; 23:6.
2. The firstborn son of Moses by Zipporah; born in Midian. (Ex 2:21, 22; 1Ch 23:14-16) Moses’ father-in-law Jethro came to Moses in the wilderness, bringing with him Moses’ wife Zipporah and their two sons, Gershom and Eliezer. (Ex 18:2-4) The priestly service of Gershom’s descendant Jonathan on behalf of the Danites was illegal, because, although he was a Levite, he was not of Aaron’s family.—Jg 18:30.
3. Head of the paternal house of Phinehas who accompanied Ezra from Babylon.—Ezr 8:1, 2.
