UPDATE | Sister Svetlana Monis Loses Appeal

On March 9, 2022, the Court of the Jewish Autonomous Region overturned Sister Svetlana Monis’ guilty verdict. Her case will now be sent to the Birobidzhansky District Court of the Jewish Autonomous Region for retrial.

On May 12, 2021, the Court of the Jewish Autonomous Region denied Svetlana’s appeal. The Russian court instead ruled in favor of the prosecutor’s appeal to adjust her original sentence, a fine of 10,000 rubles ($135 U.S.), to a suspended prison sentence of two years and six months. She does not have to go to prison at this time.
