Ashgabad Authorities Imprison Mansur Masharipov on False Charges

Law-enforcement officers arrested Mansur Masharipov on June 30, 2016, in a city park in Ashgabad, Turkmenistan. The police had been tracking him since the summer of 2014 for his religious activities as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Mr. Masharipov, 32 years old, was charged with assaulting a police officer, although it was the police officers who had subjected him to rough physical mistreatment. Mr. Masharipov has previously endured abuse, even torture, for his peaceful religious activities. On August 18, 2016, a Turkmenistan court sentenced him to one year in a general regime prison colony. Mr. Masharipov has appealed the conviction.
