LIFE STORY
Plenny Blessings Come Wen You Show You Kea Fo Oddas
MY GRANMADDAH who was one Anglican wen say, “Da Anglican Church no teach da trut. No stop looking fo um.” Afta my maddah wen hea dis, she wanted fo find da religion dat teach da trut. But weneva Witnesses Fo Jehovah wen come by oua house in Toronto, Canada, she neva like talk to dem an wen tell me fo go hide. But in 1950 wen my aunty, my maddah’s sistah, wen start fo study wit da Witnesses, my maddah wen tag along. Dey wen study my aunty’s house an layta on wen get baptize.
My faddah was one elda in da United Church of Canada, an he wen send me an my sistah to Sunday school ery week. Den afta, at 11:00 a.m. we wen go wit him to da church service. Layta on in da aftanoon we wen go wit my maddah to da Kingdom Hall. Was easy fo see da two religions was supa diffren.
My maddah wen share da stuff she wen learn wit her good frenz Bob an Marion Hutcheson, an dey wen come into da trut. Da Hutcheson’s wen take me an dea three boys to New York City to da eight-day Divine Will Intanational Big Kine Meeting in 1958. Wen I tink about um, probly was hard fo take all us to dat big kine meeting, but was one of da bestes time of my life.
BRADDAHS AN SISTAHS WEN KOKUA ME
Wen I was on teenaga, we wen live on one farm an I wen love fo take kea da animals. I wen tink about coming one animal docta. My maddah wen tell one elda wat I wanted fo do. In one nice way he wen remind me dat da world going pau pretty soon, an wen ask how going college going affeck me staying close to Jehovah. (2 Tim 3:1) Cuz of dat I wen choose not fo go college.
I still was tinking wat I was going do afta I wen grad. I wen go field service ery weekend, but I neva really like um an I neva tink I could be one pionea. Same time, my faddah an unco who no was in da trut was pushing me fo go work full time at one big insurance company in Toronto. My unco was one big boss ova dea, so I wen take da job.
In Toronto, I wen work choke ovatime an hang out wit worldly peopo. Dass how come I neva go preaching an meetings dat much. I wen live wit my granfaddah who no was one Witness, but afta he wen mahke, I had fo move.
Da Hutchesons was jus like my parents. Dey da ones dat wen take me to da big kine meeting in 1958. Dey wen hanai me an wen help me come moa tight wit Jehovah. In 1960 me an dea son, John, wen get baptize togedda. John wen start fo pionea an dat wen make me like preach moa too. Da braddahs in da local hui wen see me come moa solid in da trut, an layta dey wen ask me fo be da Theocratic Ministry School servant. a
I WEN FIND ONE AWESOME WIFE AN WEN COME ONE PIONEA
In 1966 I wen marry one pionea, Randi Berge, who wanted fo go wea need help. Oua circuit ovaseah wen help us fo do moa an wen tell us fo move to help one local hui in Orillia, Ontario. So we wen go move.
Right afta we got dea, I wen start fo regula pionea wit Randi. She was excited fo go preach an dat wen make me come jus like her! Afta I wen go all out fo pionea, dass wen I wen start fo see how awesome was fo teach peopo da Bible an see dem undastand um. Was one unreal blessing fo help one couple in Orillia change dea life an start fo serve Jehovah.
ONE NEW LANGUAGE AN ONE NEW WAY FO TINK
Dis one time we wen go Toronto, I wen meet one of da braddahs who take kea Bethel ova dea, Arnold MacNamara. He wen ask us fo spesho pionea an fas I wen say, “Shoots! Az long az we no go Quebec!” I wen start fo tink like da guys in Canada who talk English. Dey neva like da guys in Quebec who wen talk French cuz had beef ova dea. Dat time Quebec was going agains da govament cuz dey wanted fo be on dea own an no be part of Canada anymoa.
Arnold wen tell, “Da ony place da branch going send you fo spesho pionea is Quebec.” I knew awready Randi wanted fo go ova dea, so right den an dea I wen say we would go. Layta on I wen figga dat was one of da bes tings we wen choose fo do!
Afta we wen pau one five-week class fo learn French, me an Randi an anodda couple wen go Rimouski, around 336 miles northeast of Montreal. I wen find out we still had plenny fo learn. One time I was suppose to say dat “Austrian delegates” was going come to oua big kine meeting, but I wen say “ostrich delegates.”
Wen we was in Rimouski, four single sistahs an anodda couple, da Huberdeaus, an dea two girls wen join up wit us. Da Huberdeaus wen rent one seven bedroom place to da pioneas dat we wen call da White House cuz dass wat wen look like. Always had 12 to 14 peopo living dea. Cuz we was spesho pioneas, me an Randi always had fo be out in service, morning time, aftanoon, an nite time. We supa tankful had somebody fo work wit us, even wen was winta time.
We wen come so tight wit dose pioneas, dey was ohana to us. Sometime we would sit around one fire togedda o we wen have one “pierogi day.” Dass wea all us would make dumplings wit diffren kine stuff inside um. One of da braddahs wen play music, so on Saturday nights we would kanikapila.
Plenny guys in Rimouski wen like learn about da Bible. In less den five years, we got fo see some of oua Bible learnas get baptize an da local hui wen grow to about 35 braddahs an sistahs.
We wen get good training az preachas in Quebec. We had see how Jehovah wen help us fo go preach an wit da tings we wen need fo live. On top of all dat we wen learn fo love da peopo who wen talk French ova dea, dea language, an dea culture. An cuz of dat we wen love odda cultures too.—2 Cor 6:13.
Outa no wea, da branch we ask us fo move to da town of Tracadie. Dass on da east side of New Brunswick. Was hard cuz we jus wen lease one apartment an I had one deal fo teach at da school part time. An some of oua Bible learnas wen jus come publishas an we was in da middo of building one Kingdom Hall.
We wen pray about um all weekend an go Mal 3:10) Cuz Randi was solid wit Jehovah, put oddas firs, an could laugh about stuff, dat wen make moving moa easy.
visit Tracadie, an was way diffren from Rimouski. But we wen tink dat cuz Jehovah wanted us fo be dea, we going. We wen leave all da stuff we was worried about wit Jehovah an we had see how he wen work um out. (Robert Ross was da ony elda in oua new local hui. He wen pionea wit his wife, Linda, an afta dea firs boy was born dey wen choose fo stay ova dea. Even tho dey was taking kea dea litto boy, dey wen still malama us an go all out in da ministry. Dat wen help us plenny.
DA BLESSINGS OF GOING WEA EVA NEED HELP
Afta we wen pionea fo two years in Tracadie, someting else we neva expeck wen happen. Dey wen ask us fo do circuit work. We wen serve da English circuit fo seven years an den one French circuit in Quebec. Léonce Crépeault, oua districk ovaseah in Quebec, would tell me my talks was good. But layta on he wen ask, “How you tink you can make yoa talks so dat it help peopo moa?” b Wen he wen do dat, wen show he wen kea an dat wen help me make my talks moa to da point an down to earth.
At da 1978 “Victorious Faith” Intanational Big Kine Meeting in Montreal, I got fo do someting I neva wen foget. I wen work fo take kea da food. Had 80,000 peopo an da way we was going feed dem was diffren from befoa. Eryting was brand new, da equipment, da menu, an da way we make da food. We had about 20 refrigerata trucks, an sometimes would break down. We no could set up da day befoa cuz had one game going on. We had fo go in at midnite. Fo make breakfast we had fo fire up da ovens befoa da sun come up. Even if we was tired I wen learn plenny from da guys dat wen help out. We wen work hard an could have fun, but still yet wen get stuff done. We all wen come real close cuz of dat, an we still good frenz til now. Was unreal fo
be part of dis importan big kine meeting in Quebec, wea befoa, in da 1940’s an 1950’s, dey wen make um real hard fo oua braddahs ova dea.I wen learn plenny from da odda ovaseahs at oua big kine meetings in Montreal. One year, David Splane, who now stay one of Jesus Luna Guys, was da convention ovaseah. At anodda big kine meeting layta on, wen dey wen ask me fo take kea dat kuleana, David wen help me plenny.
Afta 36 unreal years in da circuit work, dey wen ask me fo teach da School fo Congregation Eldas in 2011. In two years me an Randi wen sleep in 75 diffren beds, but was worth it. Erytime wen da week was pau, da eldas was supa tankful cuz dey wen see how much da Luna Guys kea about dea relationship wit Jehovah.
Layta on I wen teach da School fo Kingdom Evangelizas. Da students plenny times wen feel tired an stress out cuz dey had fo sit in class fo seven hours, study fo three hours, an take kea four o five parts ery week. Me an da odda teacha wen help dem fo see dat dey no could do um witout Jehovah. Dey was so shock fo see how much dey could do wen dey wen rely on Jehovah, an I neva going foget dat.
PLENNY BLESSINGS COME WEN YOU SHOW YOU KEA FO ODDAS
Cuz my maddah wen show she kea fo oddas, dat wen help her Bible learnas an wen even help my faddah change how he tink about da trut. Three days afta she wen mahke, he wen shock all us wen he wen come to da meeting, an he neva stop going fo da nex 26 years. Even if Dad neva get baptize, da eldas wen tell me dat ery week he was always da firs one at da meetings.
My maddah wen set one good exampo fo me an my sistahs. All three of my sistahs an dea odda halfs all serving Jehovah. One stay at da branch in Portugal an da odda stay at da branch in Haiti.
Me an Randi stay spesho pioneas in Hamilton, Ontario. In da circuit work we wen love fo go wit peopo wen dey teach oddas da Bible. Now we so happy dat we get oua own Bible learnas who wen start fo come frenz wit Jehovah. Now dat we getting closa to oua braddahs an sistahs in oua new local hui, we so happy fo see how Jehovah helping dem thru eryting.
Wen we tink back, we so tankful fo erybody dat wen show dey kea fo us. Dat make us like take kea oddas an help dem serve Jehovah da bes way dey can. (2 Cor 7:6, 7) In one of da ohanas, da wife, da boy an da girl all stay in full-time service. I wen ask da husband if he had eva tink about being one pionea. He wen tell me he awready taking kea three of um. So I wen tell, “You tink you can take kea dem betta den Jehovah?” I wen encourage him fo go try um out an see fo himself how good is. Six months layta he we start fo pionea.
Me an Randi going keep telling da younga ones about Jehovah’s awesome powa, an we hope dey going be happy serving Jehovah jalike us.—Songs 71:17, 18.
