First Corinthians 8:1-13

  • Food wey them give idols (1-13)

    • For us na only one God dey (5, 6)

8  Now make I talk about food wey them give idols as sacrifice. We know say all of us know something. The thing wey person know de make-am carry body up, but love de encourage.  If anybody think say e know something, e never really know-am as e suppose know-am.  But if anybody love God, God know the person.  Now make I talk about to chop food wey them give idols as sacrifice. We know say idol no be anything at all,* and say na only one God dey.  Even though say plenty things dey wey people de call gods, whether na for heaven or for earth, just as plenty “gods” dey and plenty “lords” dey,  for us, na only one God dey, wey be the Papa, wey everything come from, and wey we de live for; and na only one Lord dey, wey be Jesus Christ, wey everything come through-am and we get life through-am.  But no be everybody know this one. But because some people don worship idol before, when them chop this kind food, them de see-am as something wey people sacrifice to idol, and because their conscience dey weak, e de worry them.*  But food no go bring us near God more. We no lose if we no chop, and we no gain if we chop.  But make una continue to dey careful so that the right wey una get to choose, no go somehow be something wey go make people wey dey weak fall. 10  If anybody see say you wey know about this things de chop for temple wey people de worship idol, this one no go make the conscience of that person wey dey weak to hard sotey e chop food wey them give idols as sacrifice? 11  So because of wetin you know, the faith of the person wey dey weak go scatter, and na your brother wey Christ die for. 12  When una sin against una brothers for this way and wound their weak conscience, una de sin against Christ. 13  Because of this one, if food de make my brother fall, I no go ever chop meat again so that I no go make my brother fall.
