LIFE STORY

We Don Learn Say We No Go Ever Reject Wetin Jehovah Say Make We Do

We Don Learn Say We No Go Ever Reject Wetin Jehovah Say Make We Do

AFTER rain fall finish with heavy breeze and thunder, mud full everywhere for the river. And the river come de flow fast-fast sotey e carry big-big stones comot. We need to go the other side of the river, but water don spoil the bridge. Me and my husband wey e name na Harvey, with the person wey de translate Amis language for us, just de fear. As the brothers for the other side de fear as them de look us, we start to cross. The first thing wey we do na to drive our small motor enter the back of one truck wey big pass our motor. We no tie the motor with rope or chain. And the truck come de go small-small inside the water. As we de go, e come be like say the place too far. We just de beg Jehovah to help us, and we reach there safe. Na for 1971 this thing happen. That time, we dey for the east coast of Taiwan. The place really far from the place wey they born us. Make I tell wuna our story.

HOW WE START TO LEARN ABOUT JEHOVAH

Harvey get three brothers, and e senior all of them. E family learn the truth for one place for Western Australia. Na more than 80 years ago when the country really dey poor. Harvey love Jehovah as e de grow, and e baptize when e dey 14 years. As time de go, Harvey learn say no be better thing to reject assignment for congregation. When e still be young boy, e no gree accept to read Watchtower for congregation because e think say e no qualify. But one brother help Harvey change the way e de think when e tell-am say, “When person for Jehovah’s organization tell you to do something, the person think say you go fit do-am!”—2 Cor. 3:5.

I learn the truth for England with my mama and my senior sister. After, my papa accept the truth. But for beginning e no like Jehovah Witness people. My papa no like-am make I be Jehovah Witness, but I baptize when I dey nine years. From that time, I plan say I go be pioneer and then become missionary. But my papa no gree say I go be pioneer until I reach 21 years. And I no plan say I go reach that age before I start to pioneer. My senior sister pack go Australia. So when I dey 16 years, my papa gree make I go stay with my senior sister. At last, when I reach 18 years, I start to pioneer.

Our wedding day for 1951

I meet Harvey for Australia. The two of us want be missionary. We marry for 1951. And after we don pioneer together for two years, they say make we do circuit work. Our circuit for Western Australia really big. So many times, we de drive long hours for dry area and where people no dey.

OUR PLAN DON HAPPEN!

Gilead graduation for Yankee Stadium for 1955

For 1954, they say make we attend class number 25 of Gilead school. That plan wey we get since to be missionary go soon happen! Na ship carry us go New York. And as we reach there, we start deep Bible study program. To study Spanish na still part of the school program. This one really hard for Harvey because e no fit twist e tongue to call letter “r” the way Spanish people de call-am.

For the school, the instructors announce say if anybody go like to go serve for Japan make e talk so that e go join the Japanese-language class. But we decide say na anywhere Jehovah’s organization say make we go, we go go. Small time after, one of the Gilead instructors wey e name na Albert Schroeder, notice say we never write our name for the Japanese class. So e tell us say: “Make wuna still think about-am again.” When Brother Schroeder see say we never still write our name, e talk say: “Me and the other instructors don write wuna name. Try to learn how to speak Japanese.” E no too hard for Harvey to sabi the language.

We move go Japan for 1955. That time, na only 500 publishers dey for the whole country. Harvey dey 26 years, and I dey 24 years. Na one city wey the name na Kobe they send us go, and we serve there for four years. After, they say make we go back to traveling work. E really sweet us say we go back, and the area wey we serve near the city wey them de call Nagoya. We really like everything about our assignment—the brothers and sisters, their food, and how the area be. But after some time, we come get another chance to do wetin Jehovah say make we do.

WE FACE THINGS FOR OUR NEW ASSIGNMENT WEY WE NEVER FACE BEFORE

Harvey and me with other missionaries for Kobe, Japan, for 1957

After we don spend three years for traveling work, Japan branch ask us whether we go like move go Taiwan so that we go fit preach to Amis people. Some of the brothers for there don be apostates. So the branch for Taiwan need brother wey sabi speak Japanese well, so that e go fit help correct the situation. * We love our assignment for Japan, and so e no dey easy for us to decide wetin to do. But we agree to go because Harvey don learn say e no go ever reject any assignment from Jehovah’s organization.

We move go Taiwan for November 1962. Na 2,271 publishers Taiwan get that time, and many of them na Amis people. But, we need to first learn Chinese language. Na only one textbook we get to learn the language, and one teacher wey no sabi speak English. But we still learn-am.

Small time after we move go Taiwan, they say make Harvey be the branch servant. That time the branch small, so Harvey get time to do e office work and still spend about three weeks every month to serve the brothers and sisters. E still serve as district overseer from time to time, and e de give talk for assembly. Harvey for give talks for Japanese and the Amis brothers and sisters for understand-am well. But that time, government give law say when any religion gather together na Chinese they go use. So Harvey give talks for Chinese language even though say e no too easy for-am, then another brother interpret-am for Amis language.

That time, government use military de control Taiwan. So brothers need to get permission before they go fit allow them to do assembly. To get the permit no easy, and police people no de give-am out quick. If the week of the assembly don reach and police never still give the permit, Harvey go just sitdown with them for police station until they give-am the permit. This style wey Harvey use really work because police people no de like-am make person from another country come sitdown for their station de wait.

FIRST TIME WEY I CLIMB MOUNTAIN

When we de cross one river wey no deep for Taiwan to go preach

For the weeks wey we de spend with the brothers, we de spend more than one hour de waka de climb mountain and cross river. I remember the first time wey I climb mountain. After we don quick chop our morning food, we enter bus for 5:30 for morning and go one far village. We trek pass one side wey water dey, and we climb mountain. The mountain no straight, e get sharp bend sotey the leg of the brother wey de climb for my front nearly dey the same level with my eye.

That morning, Harvey work with some brothers and sisters for preaching, but na only me preach for the small village wey Japanese people de live. Around one o’clock for afternoon, I come de feel weak because I never chop for some hours. After, when me and Harvey come meet, other brothers don go. The people wey Harvey give magazine, use three raw chicken egg do contribution. So e show me how I go eat the raw egg. E put two small hole for the egg and start to suck-am. Even though say the thing get as e be, I try one. So, Harvey give me the last egg because e no go fit carry me come down from the mountain if I faint because of hunger.

I NEVER BATH FOR THIS KIND CONDITION BEFORE

For one circuit assembly, I face wetin I never face before for my life. We stay for one brother house wey dey near Kingdom Hall. Since Amis people see bath as something wey really dey important to them, the circuit overseer wife arrange water and other things wey me and Harvey go use bath. But Harvey dey busy so e say make I go bath first. The circuit overseer wife arrange one bucket of cold water, one bucket of hot water, and one empty basin. I really surprise to see say the sister keep the water outside the house. And the house face the Kingdom Hall wey plenty brothers dey de work as them de prepare for the assembly. I tell the sister make e give me curtain to cover the place. E give me one light plastic to use cover! I try make I go back of the house wey cover small but some animals wey be like duck dey there wey fit bite me. So I tell myself say: ‘This brothers really dey busy, they fit no even notice say I de bath, and if I no bath they go vex. Ok, make I bath!’ Na so I bath for there o.

We wear the cloth wey Amis people de wear when them de do important ceremony

BOOKS FOR AMIS PEOPLE

Harvey notice say our Amis brothers and sisters no de too do well because many of them no sabi read, and they no get any magazine for their language. Since they don already start to write Amis language with Roman letters that time, we see this one as better chance to teach the brothers and sisters how to read their own language. This one na big work, but as time de go, the brothers succeed to learn about Jehovah for their language. Around 1966, Amis people start to get our book them for their language. And for 1968 we start to print Watchtower for Amis language.

But that time, government ban any book wey they no write with Chinese language. So that we no go cause problem, na another style we use print Amis Watchtower. For example, for some time, we use two language print one Watchtower. The two language na Chinese Mandarin and Amis. If anybody ask question, the thing just be like say we de use the magazine de teach people Chinese. Since that time, Jehovah’s organization don de print different-different book them for Amis language to help the people learn the truth for Bible.—Acts 10:34, 35.

JEHOVAH CLEAN THE CONGREGATION

For about twenty years, many Amis brothers no de live their life the way Jehovah want. Since they no really understand wetin Bible talk, many of them de live dirty life, them de over drink, or take tobacco and betel nut. Harvey visit many of the congregations, e try to help the brothers understand how Jehovah de see this things wey them de do. Na one of the place wey we visit, we face the problem wey I talk for the beginning.

Some brothers wey dey humble change the way them de live their life. But many other people no gree change. And for about 20 years, the number of publishers for Taiwan drop from more than 2,450 to about 900. This one no encourage us at all. But we know say, Jehovah no go ever bless organization wey no clean. (2 Cor. 7:1) After some time, the congregations start to serve Jehovah for the right way, and Jehovah don bless the brothers for Taiwan. Now they get more than 11,000 publishers.

From around 1980 the brothers and sisters for Amis congregations come de get strong faith, and this one give Harvey chance to spend more time with the Chinese people. And e really glad as e help husbands of some sisters to become Jehovah Witness. I remember how e glad when e see one of this men de pray to Jehovah for the first time. Me too, dey happy say I don teach many people to hold Jehovah tight. I be work for Taiwan branch together with the son and daughter of one of my former Bible students. This one really give me joy.

BIG LOSS WEY REALLY PAIN ME

Now, my husband no dey with me again. We spend about 59 years together for our marriage. Harvey my dear husband die for January 1, 2010, after e don battle with cancer. E don spend almost 60 years for full-time service! I still de miss-am no be small. But I really dey happy say I support-am for the work wey e don do for two wonderful countries! We learn how to speak two language wey really dey hard to learn for Asia, and Harvey even sabi write-am.

After some years, Governing Body decide say e go good for me to go back to Australia because of my age. Wetin first come my mind be say, ‘I no go like to comot for Taiwan.’ But Harvey don teach me say make I no ever reject any assignment from Jehovah’s organization. So I agree say I go go back. After, I come see say, e really make sense as Governing Body talk say make I go back.

I really glad say I de use the Japanese and Chinese language wey I don learn to take people for tour when they come visit Bethel

Today, I de work for Australasia branch for week days, and for weekend I de preach with brothers and sisters for congregation. I really dey happy say for Bethel, I de use Japanese and Chinese language wey I don learn to take people for tour. I really de wait for the time wey Jehovah go do the thing wey e don promise say, e go bring people wey don die back to life. And I know say e go remember my dear Harvey wey don learn say e no go ever reject any assignment from Jehovah’s organization.—John 5:28, 29.

^ par. 14 Today, na Chinese language government approve for Taiwan. But since Japanese na the language wey government don approve for many years, many tribes for Taiwan still de speak-am.
