LIFE STORY

Wetin I Don Do Na Wetin I Suppose to Do

Wetin I Don Do Na Wetin I Suppose to Do

DONALD RIDLEY na lawyer wey help defend the work of Jehovah Witness people for court for more than thirty years. E really help doctors, judge them and plenty other people to understand say anybody wey no want take blood get the right to reject-am. E help our organization to win many case for different-different high court for United States. E friends de call-am Don, and they know-am as person wey de work hard, e no de carry shoulder up, and e de pour e self like water to help other people and work for Jehovah.

For 2019, they notice say Don get one sickness wey never get cure. And the sickness continue to bad more-more sotey, e die for August 16, 2019. Na e story be this.

They born me for St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A., for 1954. My papa and mama no be poor people and they no rich, they just dey ok. They be Catholic. Na five children my papa and mama born, and na me be second born. Na Catholic primary school I attend, and I de help priest for altar. Even with this one, na only smalI thing I sabi for Bible. That time, I believe say God must dey wey make everything. But I no believe say Catholic Church fit help me know who God really be and worship am well.

HOW I LEARN THE TRUTH

When I dey year one for William Mitchell College of Law, Jehovah Witness people come my house. I dey busy de wash my cloth, but the husband and wife sofri tell me say they go come back. So when they come back, I ask them two question. I ask say: “Why bad people de make-am for life pass good people?” and “How person fit dey happy for life?” They give me the book The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life and the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures. That time, na green cover e get. And I still agree make they come de study Bible with me. The study really open my eye. I happy to learn say na God Kingdom be the only government wey go fit rule this earth well, and solve all our problem. I come see say government for this world no get head, na so-so pain, suffer-suffer, partial, and problem e don bring for this world.

I give my life to Jehovah for the beginning part of the year 1982, and after for that same year, I baptize for the “Kingdom Truth” Convention wey we do for St. Paul Civic Center. The next week, I go back to the civic center to write one exam wey law student must write before e become lawyer. For the beginning part of October, they tell me say I pass the exam.

For the “Kingdom Truth” Convention, I meet Mike Richardson, one Bethelite for Brooklyn. E tell me say they don form legal office for our headquarter. I come remember the thing wey Ethiopian eunuch talk for Acts 8:36. So I ask myself, ‘Wetin de hold me make I no work for Legal Office?’ I just fill Bethel form.

My papa and mama no dey happy say I don be one of Jehovah Witness. My papa ask me whether, if I de work for Bethel I go still do my work as lawyer, and whether I go get any benefit. I tell my papa say na God work, they no de pay salary. But they go de give me small pocket money every month as Bethelite.

After I don finish some work wey I hold for hand, I start my Bethel assignment for Brooklyn, New York, for 1984. Na for Legal Office they say make I work. The experience wey I get those years wey I work for court prepare me for wetin I go soon face.

THEY REPAIR THE STANLEY HALL AND MAKE-AM NEW

The Stanley Hall as e be when we just buy-am

The Stanley Hall dey for Jersey City, for New Jersey. They buy-am for November 1983. The brothers wey dey in charge of the work apply for permit to repair the light, pipe for water, and other things. When the brothers meet the government people for that area, they explain to them say they want use the place as convention hall of Jehovah Witness people. But this one bring problem. The law for that area talk say, buildings for religion must dey only the area wey people de live, no be for business area. The Stanley Hall dey for inside business area, so they no gree give the permit. The brothers go meet the government people again, but they no listen to the brothers.

For my first year for Bethel, our organization take the case to federal court. Because I just finish my two years court training for St. Paul, Minnesota. I really understand that kind case. One of our lawyer argue the case say other people don use the same Stanley Hall for different-different occasion like music concert, film and other things. So why e come be bad thing for religion to use-am? The federal court judge the matter, and they talk say the court for Jersey City no respect the right and freedom wey religion get. And the federal court give order say make the Jersey court give us any permit wey we need for the work. Na there I start to see how Jehovah de bless e organization for court matter. I really happy say I be part of the people wey Jehovah use for e work.

The brothers no waste time start big repair work for the place. And for September 8, 1985 they do the graduation of the 79th class of Gilead for Jersey City Assembly Hall. This one no reach one year wey they start the repair work. As I be part of the team of lawyers wey de work to support Kingdom work and defend Jehovah’s people for court, na really big favor for me. And the joy wey I get really really big pass anything wey I feel for the work wey I de do before I come Bethel. That time, I no know say Jehovah go use me do plenty other work for front.

HOW WE DEFEND OUR RIGHT FOR SOME MEDICAL CASE

Especially after 1980, doctors and hospitals no respect the right wey our brothers and sisters get to choose wetin they want. They no de gree treat them without blood or things wey contain blood. Pregnant women really suffer because all the judge for court de feel say pregnant women no get right to say they no go collect blood. They think say they fit die leave their pikin to suffer without mama.

For December 29, 1988, Sister Denise Nicoleau lose plenty blood after e born e pikin. The condition really serious, e blood level drop to 5.0, and the doctor talk say the sister go need to take blood. But Sister Nicoleau no gree. And so the next morning, the hospital go collect permission for court say they really need to give the sister blood. The court no even ask the sister or e husband, they just give the hospital order say make they give the sister blood.

For Friday, December 30, the hospital just give the sister blood, even as the husband and other family members no gree. That evening, they arrest some of the family members and some elders, and talk say they block them make they no see chance give Sister Nicoleau blood. For Saturday morning, December 31, newspapers and TV and radio stations for New York City report the matter.

Me and Philip Brumley when we still dey young

For Monday morning, I meet one judge for high court, e name na Milton Mollen. I explain wetin happen, and make-am clear say the other judge no hear from them before e give the order. Judge Mollen tell me to come e office for afternoon so that we go talk about some law wey we fit use for this case. That evening, my overseer wey e name na Philip Brumley follow me go judge Mollen office. The judge still tell the lawyer wey the hospital de use to call. As we de talk about the matter our voice de loud. The discussion really hot sotey Brother Brumley use e notepad send me message say make I lower my voice and calm down. That one na better advice because I don already de vex as I de try to prove my point say the hospital lawyer dey wrong.

From left to right: Richard Moake, Gregory Olds, Paul Polidoro, Philip Brumley, me, and Mario Moreno—our lawyers the day wey we go defend our case of Watchtower v. Village of Stratton for U.S. Supreme Court.—Check Awake! of January 8, 2003 page 3-44-56-8, and 9-11.

After about one hour, Judge Mollen talk say na our case they go judge first tomorrow morning. As we de comot for the place, Judge Mollen talk say the hospital lawyer go “see pepper tomorrow.” That one mean say e no go easy for the lawyer to prove-am for court tomorrow say the hospital get right to give Sister Nicoleau blood by force. That one really make me feel say Jehovah de tell me say we get better chance to win the case. E really dey wonderful to see how Jehovah de use us to do wetin e want.

We sleep late that night because we de prepare wetin we go talk the next morning. The court no far from Brooklyn Bethel, so many of us from our Legal Office waka go there. Na four judge listen to the case. And after they listen finish, decide say the order wey the hospital follow to give our sister blood dey wrong. The high court favor Sister Nicoleau. And they make law say e no good to give order and force person do wetin e no want if they no first listen and hear from the person. If they do like that, e mean say they no show respect for the right wey the person get.

The highest court for New York support say make they treat Sister Nicoleau without blood because e get the right. Out of the four high court blood case wey I don join for different-different state for America, na this case be my first one. (Check the box “ Some Court Case Wey We Don Win for High Court.”) I don still join other lawyers for Bethel for some other case like divorce, who pikin go dey with, and other matter wey concern land and property.

MY MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE

Me and my wife, Dawn

When I first meet my wife, Dawn, e don divorce e husband and e de take care of e three children. E de work and still de pioneer. E don really suffer for life, but na the kind love wey e get for Jehovah really touch me. For 1992, we attend the “Light Bearers” District Convention for New York City, and I ask-am whether we fit date. One year after, we marry. To get better wife wey really love Jehovah and dey funny na big blessing from Jehovah. The truth be say, na so-so good Dawn de pay me all the days of our life together.—Prov. 31:12.

When we marry, the three children dey 11, 13, and 16 years. I really want be better papa for them, so I sofri read our publications wey talk about how person fit succeed to be better stepfather, and I try to do the things wey I read. Sometimes e no dey easy, but I happy say the children don accept me as their correct friend and better papa. We de allow our children friends to come our house anytime wey they want, and so our house de always full with young people.

For 2013, me and Dawn move go Wisconsin to help take care of our papa and mama as them don old. E surprise me say they no end my Bethel assignment. They say make I still continue de help our organization for any court case as temporary volunteer.

SERIOUS CHANGE WEY I NO EXPECT

For September 2018, I notice say I de clear my throat everytime. Our doctor check me, but e no see wetin fit cause the problem. So later, another doctor tell me say make I go see doctor wey e work na to treat sickness wey fit affect place like the brain or nerves. For January 2019, the new doctor wey I go see check me and tell me say, e be like say I get one kind sickness wey no dey common, and say e go soon affect all part of my body.

Three days later, as I de do my best sport, I fall and my right hand break. I don de do that sport all my life. So na that time I know say I don de lose my balance, I no get power to control my muscles again. I surprise for the way the sickness take bad fast-fast sotey, e de hard me to talk, waka, and even swallow something.

Na really big favor for me say I use my work as lawyer to do the small wey I fit for Jehovah and e organization. And I don still get the chance to write many books for doctors, lawyers, and judges. And I don still give talks for many part of the world to defend the right wey Jehovah people get to choose say they want treatment and operation without using blood. Even with all this one, I go still talk wetin dey Luke 17:10 wey talk say I be slave wey no reach anything, and ‘the things wey I don do na things wey I suppose do.’
